The industrial revolution was supposed to fix everything and it did but in order to achieve perfection they needed to get rid of that monetary based system and start fresh with a system that would have been fairer toward everyone and would be more representative of the amount of resources available per individual.
They did not do that at all. Instead they decided to become frauds who take advantage of the weakest amongst them and just make a bunch of rules to get rid of the unproductive a lot faster.
Everything would have been better if they would have guaranteed basic income to every adult and make a set of rules so that this basic income would have remained enough for anyone to live with decent lodging, effective transportation, adequate nutrition and a great social network that would allow people to find work in a jiffy and learn a trade that they like in a place they are needed without hassle.
They did exactly the opposite of all that.
That's what happened to the big American dream.
