My sister and dad want me to go to college because I'm stuck doing delivery work and making hardly any fucking money at all.

What should a 33 year old white guy even study?

I want to get into nursing, but I’ve also thought about radiologic technology. I was a caregiver for my elderly mother for three years, so I know what real care looks like—hands-on, gritty, necessary. Nursing feels like a path with heart and purpose, but radiology’s got that tech edge, steady hours, and solid pay. Either way, I’m done spinning wheels in delivery—I want a career that builds something real. Maybe get my LPN to start off and go from there. Unless that's a retarded idea and just go for my RN.

I've been an ER nurse for the last five years. It's a shitty but rewarding job. Where and when you work has a huge impact on your quality of life. Patient care can be exhausting, especially in the ER when you get bogged down with unessential tasks while trying to manage critical patients.

Rad techs make decent money. Start off in XRay and then do your CT boards. Get a few years under your belt and travel. Slightly less pay, but less stress and virtually no patient care/responsibility.

I'm in Iowa, five years ago my base pay was 25, it was around 34 when I left my hospital last year and moved to an acute care and took a paycut. I think I'm back up to 33ish base pay now, working nights. Night shift differential puts me at ~40/hr. I see minimal patients and it's an easy gig. I work at the same location as a travel nurse making ~80 an hour before I took the staff position. Traveling is very lucrative if that's your thing, it wasn't for me.

Do NOT get your LPN before your RN. It's a waste of time and money. You get paid way less, get all the crap assignments, can't give IV meds.

Average base for an ER nurse in Delaware is close to $70/hr. You are very very underpaid for what you do. Probably because you're in Iowa. I get the lower COL and everything but if I had the credentials and skills that you have, I would not be in some shithole like Iowa.

I'm a male nurse OP. If you want to help people, interact with them, and care for them, get your RN. If you want to make more money but not do as much clinical work, be a rad tech. They are both about 2 years of schooling either way. There isn't really anywhere to go from being a rad tech, which is the only thing that is limiting about it. An RN is extremely flexible, and you can go on to get your BSN or even your masters and become an NP. Once you become a rad tech that's it.

If you think you’d like nursing more, why not study it?
I feel like I’m not seeing the issue here. You can either keep a job you like or take the time to study something else you’d enjoy. Both options are good.

Most recently, I was a federal fucking employee. With the United States Postal Service. I've worked for UPS, Amazon, drove for Amazon, I've done home health care work, and I've done delivery work since 2016 working for top tier companies across three states. What the fuck have you done, boy? Not a damn thing besides run your mouth. You likely have never held a job before. Ever. Probably some faggot NEET living in his elderly parents house leeching off of them and when they die, you're gonna be on the streets.

I look down upon people like you. I look down upon blue collar people too because they are ultimately pieces of shit. They're a net negative to society and they behave and live like niggers. Do you know how fucking rich most of my customers are? Very. I just delivered to a $1.4 million house on Monday. A resident drove by me in a McLaren.

>>936227339
Yeah, I know. I had a customer who was a RadTech and he recommended it. Made damn good money too but there's no upward mobility with it like there is nursing. I've always been interested in psych nursing. I was in a psychiatric unit before and the nurses were really top notch.

Because I can't pass a DOT physical due to my hearing so there's really no way for me to make more money as a delivery driver since I can't even get my CDL. Does that make sense? So I'm stuck doing last mile delivery bullshit. I would rather have a tangible skill that I can use for my own benefit. Anyone can become a delivery driver but not everyone can become a nurse.

Anyways you really have to have a passion for helping people to do nursing, otherwise you will burn out extremely fast ESPECIALLY if you work in psych. That doesn't really apply to being a rad tech. Your patients are in and out. So think about that when making a decision. You could also get your CNA in like 3 months and work as one of those to see if you are interested. That's what I did when I became a medical assistant first. They do more grunt work than nurses but you will at least get your feet in the setting to see how you feel about it

I went from photography and videographer failure to plumbing at the age of 30. Best thing about it is getting away from the fucking women and you're in the trade long enough and you'll learn about how to build a house, you'll be feeling a sense of satisfaction and reward when you learn to build things. You get away from human resources and the epic failure of propping up women while they get paid more than you.

You don't have to, but I learned plumbing and am learning gas at the age of 38 now, qualified plumber, and I'm happy with it being my base skill that supports me making YouTube videos in the long run and trying to make it in that. It's just a stepping stone for me and possibly not because I fucking love building shit.

So let me get this straight—you go to school, bust your ass, rack up debt, pass the NCLEX, get licensed as a fucking RN... and now you’re expected to do CNA grunt work because “not everywhere has CNAs or PCTs”?

Then why the fuck do CNAs exist? Why even have roles and scopes of practice if the system’s just gonna dump it all on the RN the second they’re short-staffed? I didn’t go to school to be a CNA. I didn’t pay thousands, study diagnostics, pharmacology, care plans, wound vacs, and IV pumps just to be wiping ass for $30 an hour because someone couldn’t hire a tech.

You don’t hire a mechanic to sweep the damn shop floor.
You don’t pay an architect to haul bricks.
So don’t hand me that “sometimes you just gotta” bullshit—that’s not flexibility, that’s exploitation.

If you’re gonna justify burning out RNs by saying “not everywhere has support staff”, then maybe the whole system is broken, not the nurse.
Don’t tell me I “don’t have the tolerance” for it because I expect to do the job I trained for. I’m not soft—I’m just not a fucking fool.

Call the job what it is. If you're gonna have RNs doing CNA work, then stop pretending it's a specialized, professional career. Own the bait-and-switch. But don't act like I’m the problem because I know my worth.

At that time, I wanted to go to Wake Forest University for either business or finance. My mother spent 30+ years at Citigroup so I grew up in the business, I've studied business and finance before in high school, and I went to real estate school. So it's not something I don't know how to do, it's just that I don't have the fucking energy to do it anymore.

And I got fulfillment from taking care of my dying mother for three years. But guess what? I didn't succeed in what I was tasked to do. Keep her here. She passed December 27th, 2023. And guess what else? I blame people like you for that. I blame the hospital that we took her to. And the dipshits who took care of her. That are only there for a check. Or some narcissistic bullshit that they've put themselves up to. I've met a lot of nurses where I live because I live near a massive Level I trauma center and I'll tell you this: the majority of them are pieces of shit. Especially the whores that I see at Wawa every fucking day. Skin tight scrubs on, driving a white Mercedes, I couldn't stand doing what you do. But you do it in Iowa where no one has a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of.

Yeah Iowa doesn't pay well for nurses. I'll be starting my DNP program soon but I'll still earn less doing that vs. traveling locally. It's a love/hate relationship. I would leave Iowa if my husband would give the green light, sadly all of our family is here including our kid we co-parent. The family farm is here as well, so we'll be taking that over in a few years. Also hard to justify leaving our 2.5% mortgage. I've come to terms that I'll always earn a mediocre salary for my profession.

I’m not mad at you personally for picking nursing or “wanting to help.” I’m mad as hell at what you’re defending—a system that chews people up, spits them out, and forces folks to sell their souls just to survive.

You say you want to help others, but where the fuck was that when my mother was left to rot in a hospital full of “nurses” who only clocked in for the paycheck and swaggered around in their designer scrubs? I saw the narcissism, the laziness, the cold-ass attitude wrapped up in white coats and Mercedes keys.

I lived through the bullshit you’re trying to gloss over. I saw the difference between the few who give a damn and the many who don’t. And I’m not about to let some well-meaning nurse hide behind “I’m just trying to help” while the system they’re part of lets people like my mom slip through the cracks.

If your idea of helping is just showing up to punch the clock in a scrub costume, I don’t want it. I want real change. But you? You’re cool with keeping the machine running as is, and that’s why I blame people like you too.

So yeah, keep your pity or whatever. I’m done sugarcoating this shit. I wanted to be a nurse to be better than those who let my mother die. That's all. Other than that, I could give a flying fuck.

You didn’t defend shit, you said the same tired excuses the system feeds everyone to keep them in line. Sharing your “experience” doesn’t mean you’re innocent or above criticism—it just means you’ve swallowed the bullshit and repeated it.

Calling me “schizo” is just weak-ass deflection from someone who can’t handle being called out. If you want to have a real conversation, drop the insults and own what you’re really saying—that you’re okay with how broken this all is.

But if all you got is name-calling and gaslighting? Save it. I’m done wasting time with people who hide behind “my experience” when it just props up the machine that’s fucking us all over.

Depends.

If you want 100% certainty of a job - medicine, dentistry, or nusring. If you want 90% of work in a white collar job but probably won't do the thing you actually studied for - engineering. Accounting is basically the same - boring but safe.

Anons saying law are retards. Only people who go to ivy leagues get jobs with law, otherwise you are a pencil pusher.

I worked for career service a few years back and these were the best degrees to employment. Economics and finance were the highest paying, but the employment rate compared to medicine, engineering, and accounting were lower; you can't be be an autismo and have to network - most people who are into finance are probably already good socially.

Hope this helps

I don't mean radiation tech when I say radiation therapy either. Radiation techs makes like half of what therapists make and is the same amount of schooling. It's way more rewarding too. You get to fucking kill cancer as your job. You can literally make people walk again in some cases. If you get tired of seeing patients, you can go into dosimetry and make twice as much money working from home highlighting organs on CT scans

I doubt law would be a good fit for you unless you have a family member that can walk you through that field. I hear it's generally tough getting clients unless you want to be a personal injury attorney. Lots of lawyers switch over to personal injury, so they can at least make a decent paycheck. If you choose anything in the medical field that saves lives, then you'll get lots of praise when you tell people what you do for a living. Yes there will still be those people who couldn't give a fuck what you do for a living, but there are tons of people out there who's parents and grandparents got a few extra years of life, because of medical professionals, and they really appreciate that. I'm not a medical professional, but I work for a company that manufactures life-saving medical equipment. These little devices that pull blood clots away from a patient's heart. There are techs, IT guys, Mechanical engineers, quality control managers, CNC Operators(they don't get paid much), and HR personnel. All of them get to tell family, friends and strangers that they work for a company that makes life-saving medical equipment, and that every device that company makes, saves a person's life. So keep that in mind in case you decide not to be a nurse or medical tech.
