Basically the only reason humans developed speech and therefore higher intelligence is because we developed the ability to instakill. When we began to walk upright we had these two powerful arms that were doing nothing at our sides. This allowed us to pick up rocks and weapons which allowed us to kill with a single blow to the head. No other animal can do this to their own species.
Basically the humans who were able to communicate their intentions to others became dominant because they survived longer in a world where disagreements resulted in instant death. The ones who could grunt out sounds that calmed the other person tended to survive and were more successful in groups. This lead to language acquisition which lead to the ability to pass on knowledge and complex thought.
Simply put, every single person in the world knows how to make a wheel because the first guy to make a wheel was able to pass that on to other humans.
There are chimps who have been trained to drive cars, there are orangutans who know how to spear fish, there are bonobos who figured out tools for cracking nuts but the technology dies with them because they can't meaningfully communicate. This is why humans have developed intelligence and it all started because we were able to kill a dude with a rock.
