The character suffering builds is highly rated in those who have also suffered the same.
Even in disagreement with the eventual state of the victims next to each other, they all have a common ground, so they see that the character which has become of others is a potential avenue of virtue.
Many look on and see whiny or miserable victimhood, but the resulting shift in the world order around those people eventually brings about a new fulcrum for adaptation towards those other victims who whine or moan to find peace and strength as survivors.
tl;dr
You can be flawed to many and still be evolving towards purity.
