Depends on how much traffic it gets - the VPS needs enough resources to provide the services you want to provide. For example, streaming raw data is generally less load than on-the-fly transcoding while streaming.
Achieving high uptime while under high load can be expensive and complicated, but it might not be very hard to get 90% of the way there.

Also, collecting payments can be challenging because a lot of payment companies don't want to be involved in porn.

not that hard, it depends on what you want the site to do.
the money it makes depends on if you actually make a site worth visiting.
you could make a fuck ton of money by running a porn site that lets users get porn they can't get elsewhere easily. I know a lot of people use thisvid specifically because it has users upload porn that others can only watch if they friend them, which means porn that gets DMCA'd anywhere else can stay up because the copyright holders can't easily figure out if the videos they own are actually there or not. if someone improved on that with loose rules while not getting shut down for breaking the law, it could be a lot of money if the site catches on.

Thisvid still seems kinda strict on copyrighted stuff despite allowing users to put vids on private. Search for a porn star with paywalled content and you won't find that much. You'd have to browse the site for a while through random tags and i think people have to upload stuff in different video formats or with automated/vague titles. Seen similarly structured sites with a lot more videos available under a porn star's name. Curious what the difference is.

it's about the community. you don't search for paywalled content by actress name or whatever, you upload some of your own collection with vague titles and appropriate tags for content type, and send friend requests to a few people that you notice actually do have stuff you want to see. Very quickly you will find you get lots of friend requests and DMs from other people with similar things to your collection, and expanding into the community from there is easy because you can view other's friends lists and liked content. it's very good especially for fetish content, one of my fetishes has very little free content worth seeing and a lot of paywalled stuff, and lots of the paywalled stuff is exclusively on thisvid and easy to find once you're hooked into the community.

Yea i've noticed it's popular to play that game. Never really been interested in it personally, i usually just scan the web for the videos i like. Most of it is out there without any thresholds for access. But for those who want the convenience in easy access to vids relating to their fetish and who enjoy interacting i imagine it's a great way to browse and consume porn. Yeah it depends a lot on what specific content you're trying to find. thisvid has a lot of videos you can't find anywhere else, I don't even personally interact with others much I just accept friend requests any time someone friends me to see one of the few videos I have up, because if they like what I have it's usually the case that I'll like what they have.

Personally? No, at most I glance to make sure it's not an undercover DMCA checker (aka brand new account with no content) but I've never personally ran into that. Thisvid is all about networking, if I don't like the videos someone has that doesn't mean it won't benefit them if I'm their friend. Maybe they upload something I want later. Maybe someone that does actually have something I want finds me on that person's friends list or that person's liked videos list. At worst I let someone else find something they might want at no cost or benefit to myself.

I'm not super tech savvy, but I don't have any issues with their video player. It doesn't have any major annoyances, and it's one of the sites that is incredibly easy to download videos from using inspect element. A lot of sites make it difficult or just impossible to easily reach the page for the file itself so you can just right click ">save video as", which is annoying.

I use other sites but not to upload/gather community, just for searching for porn that is easy to find. Most other sites that aren't niche indie sites just regurgitate the same batch of videos as each other or even link to each other directly, but here and there something good ends up on those sites and I find it before the DMCAs come. I haven't found any other sites as good as thisvid for the communities I'm in, which makes me think there aren't any public ones as I get DMs for "hey here's my google drive and other sites I'm on" kind of stuff all the time.
