It was formerly made romes religion, as in st.augustine had a tribunal in ad300 that put together the books of the bible. Which is the basis of the catholic church. Also it was definitely a mixture, during the time that christianity began to gain ground the roman empire was on the decline and needed a way to unify its people and a single religion with a single god was a lot more attractive than the pantheon beliefs and their multitudes of worshipper social structures
