Are the movies good? I watched the anime and loved it but the movies seem like so much to watch through and I heard they are pretty much unintelligible

The films suffered from too many cooks spoil the brew, anno/4co-directors in each film revised the plot constantly. The narrative suffered as a result. You wont get what you saw with nge/eoe. at least now you're not going to be one of those rebuild zealots who watched rebuild at age 15 and waited 15 years for it to end. To add; there is enough dropped material form the rebuild films that it could be adapted to 3 movies worth of crap. after 3.0 it was clear that anno lost interest. the original idea was that the third and fourth film would be part 1 and 2 of the same story; akin to death/air in eoe, that idea was dropped after 9-ish years hiatus. 3.0 burnt anno out and he went too far, and for the 4th he had no idea what to do and even asked hayao miyazaki for ideas, eventually they resorted to using dropped script elements and focused on miyazaki's totoro-style setting. Several gainax staff who worked on nge left; key being sadamoto, (of whom worked on the manga)

The overall script of 3+1 is nonsense. and according to tweets; the script was again ever changing; and the final quarter of the script was rushed cuz they ran out of time (9years of doing nothing and still not enough time to make a story)

Watch eoe to finish the nge story and enjoy rewatches, you should not watch rebuilds to try to learn more about nge,

I think its clear that anno only did rebuilds/kept the wait hype alive to extend eva's shelf life essentially.

You can watch rebuilds if you want but it's really bad on my part. and the rebuild fans/apologist zealots are kinda scary... some of them waited HALF of their current lifespans waiting desperately for the final rebuild film, to them it can never be bad.

Ultimately I say watch rebuilds if you wish but I think they're really bad.

Personally I don't think it was bad by any means and is well worth the watch, it ends leaving you with hope.

It's clear that anno didn't know what to do concerning Shinji in 3+1; in fact that miyazaki bit i mentioned; involved anno asking him advise for shinji's character cuz he had no idea what to do. Tsurumaki has stated that they literally winged it.

How does it leave you with hope? It's essentially the manga's bullshit ending all over agin with none of the events in the story mattering, overall messages alone its the literal exact opposite of EOE. If you're the type of anon who will say you dont understand eoe, then you're the target audience that anno/co hoped for. Many things in 3+1 dont add up in narrative and even cinematic manner; which is shocking considering the talent of the staff involved. I don't want to go into further detail and spoil the rebuild film for the other anon's sake.
