The US government and the financial industry colluded to prop up identity politics to defer the reckoning they were both about to receive in the aftermath of the 2008 Financial Crisis. They hijacked a movement that was initially focused on criticism of subprime lending, unstable investment strategies and schemes, the debt economy, and inflation. And they turned it into a movement about access to loans (The current system is just fine! Sell more loans to less qualified people!), race, sex, and "outcomes."

That didn't shake up the system in the short term, and those people were easy to pay lip service to, without making any serious changes that would affect the bottom line. Unlike restructuring to fix the institutional rot would have.

Every single transgender person has been duped and abused by that system in the hopes that they'd become good little consumers. But that philosophy has no actual goals, just a vector to follow. Nothing is ever good enough, because it's only defined by the push towards "progress."

And as a corollary, a contingent of obligate contrarians has cropped up out of the same demographics. They've lost all faith in the notion of live and let live, which they used to accept implicitly. And many of them now reject all institutions of science and philosophy that don't directly oppose anything that's ever been called progressive. They see progress itself as the enemy, not this artificial, hostile form it's currently taking.
