No one gets their deposit back. Someone should've told you that.

Lawsuit if you think you have a case. They might be buddies with a crooked judge though.

No shit. I've left every place I've rented better than I when I moved in and only once have I ever gotten any of the deposit back. And that was only like $100 out of $700.

Might as well consider it gone.

That's what happen to me, $35 out of $800 will be mailed via a check in the mail like really? The issue is I had this water damage in my place via rain and it was cosmetically bad.. Potentially mold growing as well. For this reason I'd figure id just get my money back because half my living room was destroyed. The rest of the apartment perfectly good. I'm well over it. I'm going to live in a car or rv type shit in the future if I don't buy property. I'm only 26 so it's just a life lesson ultimately. I stayed there 2.5 years. 1550 a month and they couldn't give me back $800. It's just disrespectful and intentional.

The law specifies what does and what doesn't count for damages. If there wasn't anything like broken windows you can sue.

If the deposit is a month's rent then stop paying rent the month before you move out.

99 times out of 100 you wont ever see a cent of that money back. Now sometimes you can, my second to last aprtment gave me back i think 75% of it since they were going to completely remodel the building anyway, so it does happen sometimes

Ask him to justify this; specifically.
Do you have before and after pics?
You have to CYA in the future.

First time renting? Iโ€™ve had places professionally cleaned, top to bottom, not a spec of dust or anything dirty and still donโ€™t get deposit back. Hell Iโ€™ve even replaced carpets and wood flooring. Youโ€™ll never get it back, itโ€™s a scam.
