For example, if you say you are vegan, you don't eat meat or anything that comes from animals. If you have some products from animals sometimes, a vegan purist would say that you're not a real vegan, and they would be correct. Some people take it seriously and they are entitled to do so. Very similarly, Dr. Peterson treads very carefully to say that he believes in god, in turn admitting his belief in Christianity, because he is human and makes mistakes like anyone else. "Who dare say they belief in God?" He also comments on his careful purpose and intent with his words and vocabulary, its no surprise he doesn't want to "admit" his belief in God because to him, it would mean that every single one of his actions would count towards whether he really "believed" or not and he knows he is flawed and makes mistakes like everyone else does.
TLDR; he just takes his words and beliefs more seriously, carefully, and intently than the average person
