Russian here. We have some russian movies which larp as american in their aesthetics and they're god fucking awful. Comedies are not depressive, for the most part, that's why I always liked that genre most with Russian movies. Brat and Brat-2 were perfect 90s aesthetics, I lived through those times. These days I don't know what kind of movies they make and don't care. Movies in 2020s suck everywhere.

Plenty of good soviet and Russian movies. Ocoбeннocти Haциoнaльнoй Oхoты is from the same 1990s period and is pretty kino, but I take it it's best understood by russians and finns, not sure about others. I can also recommend soviet movie Kin-dza-dza, it's kind of an absurdist fantasy, but it hits just right with regards to the covid madness. I rewatched around that time and was like "hoe fid they know?"

They have a great industrial techno scene. Some amazing labels and producers. I prefer russian culture to american. They make better art, always have.

Recent I can't really recomnend, because I don't watch em. Ma6be Хoлoп, it's what my boomer parents say they liked, kind of a truman show idea, not too bad, but kinda cringy and very mid for my taste.

Yeh, it has two sequels, but the first one is the best. Excellent cinematography and acting. The opening with the finnish guy and a black guy speaking with the perfect russian accent is just megalol, but much like many other things in that movie, I'm not sure how would I translate it.
