With the economy the way it is today, do you still tip at restaurants? I can't really afford to eat out very often so I don't tip, that's my way of saving money. It's not amazing but it happens so I don't feel bad.

Sorry, but being a server is a low skill job. Bring me my food in a timely manner. Make sure my drink is filled. Check on me periodically to ensure all of my needs are taken care of, but don't do that obsessively because it is disruptive to my meal.

If a server can't accomplish these basic tasks, they are not entitled to a tip from me. It's very simple.

When I go out to a place I like and the service is good I’ll tip around 18% because I know times are harder than they used to be. That said, though, I rarely go out to a sit-down place because that 18% is often more than I want to spend total. And I NEVER get delivery because I don’t want to tip the driver. I’ll save the money and go pick my own shit up. So I tip went I do go out, but I don’t go out as much as I used to because of tipping culture and times are hard for me, too. I suspect I’m not alone - there’s probably a lot of folks who used to go out but don’t anymore because of tipping. Tipping and what tipping culture has become is bad for business.

I flip flop on how I feel about this, but honestly, if you give me really poor service, I'm not tipping you. Respectfully, I'd sooner get up and serve myself than give free money to someone for being a rude waiter / waitress, or being terrible at their job; Keeping people like that employed is probably worse for the industry than tipping culture itself is. Think about it–if every server did their job well and to satisfaction then this wouldn't be as much of an issue to begin with, because people would generally not mind tipping. It's when tipping is expected in SPITE of poor or rude service that things have gone too far.
If you do your job adequately, (bare minimum imo) I tip. If you don't, don't expect much.
