Here is a hint for you. If the crowd is really big, there will be arial shots. If it's small and sparse, they'll have the camera man in the crowd and will keep the camera low so that people are blocking the shot. That way, you can't actually see how big the crowd is, and they can make up whatever narrative they want.
I first noticed this back in college, when I was on the quad, a small protest of about a dozen people was there yelling something, local TV was there.
Later on, when I watched the news they actually said "a massive protest at (university today)" and showed the video as I described earlier.
It's all bullshit. When it's real, they don't leave you in any doubt. When it's hard to see and you can't really tell, they're bullshitting you.
