I'm on the same side as you, brother, but you gotta understand how communists actually think. It wasn't real communism because technically it wasn't, lots of USSR nations just call themselves communists. Any self-respecting communist understands that communism is just a method of social and economical progression (Marx said this, btw, it's a concept called Historical Materialism).
Anyway, Communism has never been reached because you first need Socialism. Any Communist/Socialist will always lose the argument when you ask: "How will Communism be achieved?" Literally none of them can agree on it because there are 3 people with this ideology not meant for our modern era. Communism (at least the core essence of a communal-run civilization), likely wont be relevant for another millennia.
Right now we have pretty much two options for the future of humanity:
a) We burn ourself into the ground by destroying everything we know and love because we failed to treat the Earth in a respectful way
b) We outsmart the natural processes of Earth and manage to cultivate some means of extraction elsewhere (whether it be other planets or hyper-advanced technology that is capable of reassembling matter to construct whatever we need).
