In my experience, the most common failure is the battery becoming useless and unable to charge or hold a charge when dealing with old stuff.

But I do not know about a set button; that is unusual.

Common Functions of the SET Button:
Battery Type Selection

If the charger supports multiple types of batteries (e.g., NiCd, NiMH, Li-ion), the SET button may allow you to toggle between them.

Charge Mode Selection

Some chargers offer different charge modes like:

Fast Charge

Trickle Charge / Maintenance

Storage Mode (for keeping batteries at ~50% for long-term storage)

Reset Function

It may reset the charger if there’s a fault or error detected in the battery (e.g., overheat, short circuit).

Battery Diagnostic or Conditioning Mode

On smarter chargers, holding or pressing the SET button might initiate a reconditioning cycle, especially for older NiCd/NiMH batteries with memory effect.

TRY HOLDING THE BUTTON, ALSO TRY CYCLING THROUGH BY PRESSING A FEW TIMES.

All that said, it appears that button is for re-initialising the charging state during operation.

So it appears your battery is knackered.

If it stays red when you press the set button, then it might charge after that.

Ok, nevermind all I have wrote, This is what the manual says

On the Ozito CD‑12 charger, the SET button isn’t a mode selector or diagnostic switch—it’s simply the battery status indicator light.

According to Ozito manuals:

A solid red light (which you get when you press the SET button) means the battery has low charge or is currently charging

.

If the light stays solid red but no charging current flows (i.e. battery stays dead), that typically points to a faulty battery pack or a problem with the charger’s detection circuit .

So no red light is normal, leave it 8 hours and see if it is fully charged.

Have you tried putting a wire between the terminals to jump it?
