Christians have done far worse to keep society backwards. While mooslims funded arts and science, Christian priests were closing bathhouses because they were "unholy" (people might see each other -naked-!), so everyone went around smelling like the shit times they were in. The result was constant plagues, which the priests called "divine punishment" because they didn't want to admit to their stupidity.
