there probably was a historical Jesus (his name in English would actually be Joshua, from the Hebrew Yeshua), but as Albert Schweitzer concluded over a hundred years ago, he was most likely an apocalyptic teacher who thought the end of the world was coming soon, and that God would make him the Davidic king over a Judea free of Roman or other foreign influence
in a sense, he was right that the world--at least as the jews of the time understood it--was about to end: in the year 70, the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, killed hundreds of thousands of jews, and scattered many of the rest of them
of course, instead of being made king, Joshua was crucified by the Romans for insurrection, hence the mocking sign hung above his cross, Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, or Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews
early followers of Joshua likely had dreams or visions of him, as people who lose a loved one suddenly and violently often do, and came to reinterpret the meaning of his life and death
we see this in Paul, who almost never refers in his letters to Joshua's earthly teachings and activities, and who clearly believed that Joshua would be returning to Earth within the lifetime of some of his readers
of course, that didn't happen, because Joshua and Paul were wrong; God didn't institute his kingdom on Earth with Joshua as his anointed one, and of course Joshua didn't return to Earth to snatch up his followers and give them eternal, incorruptible bodies, because in the end, he was just a guy who died
