Threads take hours to more than half a day to make their way off of the board when they used to rotate out within a hour or two. The same handful of people post the same thing in the same threads every day. There are guys in the porn threads who have been posting the same girls for literal years. Whoever posts Log Andy spends all day and night posting a meme that had its best day more than two years ago.

Threads with real discussions of non-porn topics don't go anywhere and sit empty for half a day.

This place is dead. Just a handful of people repeatedly posting the same things every single day hoping to jump start an interaction they are somehow still desperate to have. I cannot imagine the absurdly long captcha times is helping the matter but it was already on the decline before the site came back.

That simply isn't true. I think it's much more likely that Reddit and Twitter just stole the majority of 4Chan's power outside of porn and racist/inappropriate humor so that's all that's really left.

Posts 3-5 years ago weren't THAT much different than they are now and yet the post frequency is miniscule in comparison. I checked out a thread hours ago, watched two hours of a twitch stream and then an hour of a tv show, came back and some of the same threads are still sitting here.

The actual userbase at any one time is so much smaller than people think. Probably a few hundred.

4chan has always been huge and relatively mainstream among internet users. "Anonymous" as a hacking collective has been active and in the news at least as far back as 2007. It's a combination of the same stale thread topics being the only regular activity or pushing fresh activity off, American politics largely being pushed by mainly right-wing and Russian troll farms, captchas making posting take enough effort that some people don't bother, selectively moderating against other threads but not logfag, and leaks revealing that even though 4chan isn't the honeypot we thought it was that they do store tons of info on users.

I think the two easiest, directly changeable (i.e. not an internet culture issue or dealing with outside forces like the troll farms) way to help things is just better moderation (start deleting logposting), and increase the amount of threads that can be active, including how many posts they can contain. You can't have fresh content if the regular threads and logposting pushes it out too quickly, and that's exacerbated by how quickly the regular threads reach EOL and need a new thread to be made.
