Why do people chase after demons? I mean this in any metaphorically interpreted way. I'm not speaking from a religious or political standpoint. I'm talking about people obsessed with exploring the dark and edgy side of society. People who love to watch gore videos. People who sit around on discord servers where the members do fucked up weird shit. You get the gist of what I'm saying. I don't understand why people can't just chill and relax in life. To me, I could live in a room like pic-related for the rest of my life playing video games and watching tv. I could go outside and maybe hike on a trail or grab some good food. To me that's fulfilling. Don't need to be rich or have an attractive girlfriend. I just don't understand the concept of "morbid curiosity".

Idk man. 15 years ago it was to prove how tough I am, mostly to myself actually. That no matter what happens, I won't look away.
It's a completely meaningless test, but that's how my 15 year old mind worked by then. I also thought the people in my gore videos deserved it, by virtue of being the type of person, who would allow himself to be in that position in the first place. I got off on not being like them.

I also egged people on, to do dumb and self-destructive shit, right here on 4chan, again with the reasoning "if you're dumb enough to do it, you deserve it".

"Morbid curiosity" is the answer even if you don't understand it. Some people are just fascinated by death and darkness. I guess it's part of our nature to pay attention when someone else is being hurt.

Is there a way to socially condition people into not having a morbid curiosity? Or are there downsides to doing that, like in doing so that limits people's critical thinking on conspiracy theories and shit.

Can you articulate why it's exciting to you? What's the darkest your mind has delved into it?

Maybe? You can condition people into accepting pretty much anything. The internet is already going that way, banning gore websites.

Brother, death is coming for us all.
>>937238383
I'd actually wager there isn't a way to stop people being curious about death, specifically for the above reason. It will always be relevant, as long as we're mortal, so being death-curious is almost a rite of passage.
What's more curious is OP's reluctance to view such materials. He is mortal himself. Could it be that he avoids them because he is weak?

I don't equate wanting to see cartel videos of people being mutilated to being curious about death. You can be curious about death in a philosophical, esoteric way.

I mean, it's exploration. That's what's driven humans for thousands of years. The unknown. It's why we traveled across the lands, why we have scientific breakthroughs, and modern inventions. People will never stop looking at what they can't understand in an attempt to do so. A big part of humanity is natural curiosity. The way you are trying to understand your current unknown, so is everyone else.

Gore and stuff is just one subsection of knowledge. It's how we discovered how we work, how our bodies work, how we think and what we are made of. Is everyone putting this much thought into the things they explore, probably not. But that doesn't stop us from being curious.

The more you understand yourself, the more you will understand others.

You're just not curious enough then :^)
Ok, I'm only half-joking. Yeah, there's death in the abstract, but there's also a particularly cruel death, or a particularly absurd death. Remember the Russian brick video? I actually felt so bad about the guy, one of the few times I did...
You're not guaranteed a peaceful death... and the events leading up to your death are what we call life. We're curious about life too.

Yeah but if this hypothetical works, it'd be like me being curious about how your body would react if you ate feces. So instead of looking up the medically documented reason I just look up videos of Tom Pearl eating his own shit. I get being curious about this stuff for the first time because you hear others talk about it and you don't want to feel left out on not seeing something, but at the end of the day if you're someone who spends repeated time watching gore or scat or other mentally disturbing shit I don't think you're doing it for some deeper meaning. You either have mental problems or you just think the stuff is funny in a shock sort of way.

Like imagine you overhear two people talk about life and death in a deep philosophical conversation and they ask for your input, and you respond to them with "did you guys see that funky town video".

The medical documentation was written up by people who saw the real deal. And you're accusing them of having mental issues.

I'll actually re-stress the fact that you won't have surgeons or forensic pathologists, without people who look at this shit with a level of detachment and scientific curiosity. Most of us who look at it like this don't become either of those things, cos they take skill and dedication, but at least we have some of the natural qualities that make one fit for the job.
But you actually asked "why people chase demons", and curiosity is just one of many valid answers to that question.
Gore is actually a very small part of my life these days, it was a bigger thing when I was younger.

I think that when we become too comfortable with ourselves, bored with our environment, or feel our own self-respect slipping away, we look for things that are bigger than ourselves. We look for things that transcend our day to day existence, whether it's beauty or fun or dark stuff like gore and violence. I think it's why certain kinds of people pursue violence too; they want to embrace something transcendent, even if it's evil.
I suspect it's just one of the dangers of intelligence and self-awareness.
I think we need to pay attention to where these things lead, and discipline ourselves - kind of like how an obese person becomes aware they should stop eating so much.

As for "Funky Town", cruelty can be an object of study in its own right. Why do you think women are obsessed with "true crime", or why do you think Junko Furuta became a cultural icon for being kidnapped and tortured to death?
