No really seriously when did they say this.
Do conservatives live in an entirely different world?
They receive less than 2% of their funding directly from the federal government, which is what Donald claimed they received. That was what was argued. He said they received direct money, that isn't true. They receive money indirectly, through a non governmental agency like the ones Elon wanted to set up, that agency is made up of a board of directors, all of whom the president appoints. So Donald could easily choose to change the type of public media on NPR, or PBS, and chooses not to, so he can take away public access, free television.
There isn't any other way to look at it. You don't wanna fund propaganda you don't support? Great! Ask Donald to appoint his favorite broadcast corp board, and they type of content would change. Of course he wouldn't want to do that, because it leaves the opportunity for the classic programming to continue to be broadcast. He wants to take that away, that is the only explanation.
The fact is, no network is guaranteed that grant money, and in the case of NPR and PBS, that money makes its way back to Washington, in the form of revenue to the NPR or PBS.
Conservatives hate anything too complicated for them to understand.
