They are simply muscle spasms of your diaphragm.

Don't hold your breath; because you are only going to try to inhale more air before you do it, causing you to hiccup more.

Reduce the amount of oxygen by breathing into a plastic bag (not paper). Over time, the air in the plastic bag will contain more carbon dioxide and your diaphragm will relax.

Also, lay on your back and put your hands just below your rib cage, warming your diaphragm. This will help relax your diaphragm.

If the hiccups persist, adjust the plastic bag over your mouth so you continue to breathe air in and out of the bag, but you also are getting enough new air as well.

It may take several minutes.

Your hiccups may stop and re-start using this process.
