a better result can be achieved by educating people and making them ask questions instead
why is incest "bad"? here's an experimentally proven result, it causes birth defects within several generations, so it is indeed a bad idea to practice it
why is pork "bad"? because pigs require far less resources and land to grow, so a society with no pork has to rely more on people with power as they hold their access to protein, which means you can, should and must eat pork instead of beef
pagans also used religion as proto-science, making observations and linking them to deities with predictable behaviours so that they knew when it'll rain and when it'll be cold, but by the time abrahamic religions came about we had actual science for those questions so they cut down the number of gods and stuff to learn
