Needed a roofing contractor a few years ago, being an actually intelligent person I spent weeks looking at dozens of companies. Got it down to 5 and called for inspection and estimates.
4 of them climbed up and poked at things, then wrote up itemized estimates for removel/repair/install between $17K and $19K.
5th guy stood in the driveway and *looked* at the roof, then we sat down and he poured over many options, he encouraged cedar shake (been there, lots of problems), suggested stone slate (already did work and inspection on my home over the years; roof trusses would not support 6-times heavier load), even metal but my roof is more complex than typical (11 sides) which made cutting and seaming complex. He repeatedly noted he was israeli and that part of his fee would be donated to a jewish charity. Got an estimate for the same brand and type of composite shingle as the others, he would only use tar paper not the waterproof self-sealing membranes that are industry standard (tar paper is far cheaper), and he would just put all this on top of the existing shingles... $25K.
Didn't get jewed myself, went with a middle bidder mostly due to a sooner schedule. The jew-roofer was not even a choice, until this meeting I did not fully believe the selfish jew archetype but it is very real, easy to believe they are currently committing war crimes right now.
