Even though "Misson: Earth" is 5000 pages and 1.5 million words, it's totally worth it. Just read the first book and then decide if you want to continue. I've read the entire set twice. (It's not a series; it's one continuous story split into 10 volumes.). Also check out "Lives You Wished To Lead But Never Dared", a collection of his short stories.
