They're not? They're basically the exact size of your ear canal, so they are the perfect tool to push wax further into your ear. If an ear tightly packed with wax is your idea of clean (and this is ignoring how bad your hearing will also be), then sure. For everyone else, you can put oil in your ear and then spray warm water inside with a syringe with a quad stream tip to remove built up wax.
