That's true for some characters, like the shuttle pilot from Mass Effect 3 for example. Aside from him being highly emotional and perhaps a tiny bit effeminate, you could just as easily have made him depressed about losing his wife rather than his husband. For other characters though, like Arcade Gannon from Fallout New Vegas, I think his being gay makes sense as a part of his character.
