Thoroughly smash it with a sledehammer. Then burn the fragments. Then mix them in with concrete and dump that into the Mariana's trench.

But since you're in a hurry I guess you can only do the first step or maybe that and the 2nd in the amount of time you have. That's probably good enough tbh.

Next time this happens and you're moments away from getting caught just unscrew the HDD and destroy the HDD platter with a hammer. It's made of glass so it'll break quite easily. The FBI couldn't get anything out of Adam Lanza's drive and all he did was scratch it with a screwdriver. They will 100% ask why you destroyed the HDD, just ask for a lawyer and plead the fifth.

I should add it will only break apart if it's a 2.5 inch HDD. 3.5 inch HDD platters are a lot harder and thicker so I couldn't hammer my WD Blue 500GB one while my 160 GB Hitachi came apart like butter so you may have to get creative. Try both scratching with a screwdriver and beating the fuck out of it with a hammer, that should work.

I don't know about the microwave technique, never tried it. Sound fun though.

remove all the screws so you can open it up and get the platter stack out, then sand the individual platters with whatever tools you might have. if you can't sand them, microwaving each platter individually should destroy them pretty thoroughly.
just the act of taking the stack apart will mess up the alignment to the point where it's only worth the recovery effort for nuclear secrets or whatever

overwriting is out of the question. that takes longer.
if you'd stored your data encrypted, you'd only have to erase some metadata.
learn that lesson for the next time.
for now, get the right tools, open the HDD up, and take some sand paper to the platters. that'll take a few minutes at most and the result is nothing but dust. if you want to be devious, you could reassemble the HDD and watch their faces when they try to power it up. it should make an excellent grinding sound.

HDDs are all metal. nobody's gonna break that. bend it, maybe. but that's not actually erasing anything, just making it extremely high effort to recover.
just sand the platters. low effort, highly effective.

SSDs are better than a traditional lazy delete but worse at verifiable secure wipe. a hard drive you can overwrite the sectors you care about a few times, with an SSD you send a trim command and it'll do it on its own timeframe.
it's less of an issue now bitlocker/etc are the default but 10 years ago ssds weren't recommended for secure facilities for this reason

SSDs employ wear leveling. good luck predicting where anything you write is going to end up. that includes *overwriting* what's there already.
the only proper solution is encryption.
then they'll have to beat the decryption key out of you.
if you use the right kind of encryption, the key to the data is in a metadata section, and your key opens that metadata section, and the key in the metadata section opens the actual data.
then you'd only have to erase that metadata section.
again, SSD caveats apply.

If you have time, bleach bit, or a similar program. It writes over the entire drive over and over as many times as you tell it to.

There are ways to recover data from a freshly overwritten HDD. Apparently they can tell what the data used to be due to residual magnetic fields from the old data that was just deleted. Overwriting it numerous times solves this.

It takes hours to do though. Not something you can do when the cops are knocking on your door.

If you want total destruction go buy/rent an acetylene blow torch. It can melt steel. You can melt the hard drive discs into a puddle of metal. Would only take minutes.

1. Use an SSD you fucking faggot. They break easy.
2. Unscrew the HDD and physically damage the insides.
3. Same as 2 but use fire to melt the pieces.
4. If you have time, overwrite it with software. If you have time still after that, do the previous steps as well.

I hate the fact that living in a turd world country means; converting from my currency back to usd, the price of a 12TB hard drive is around 400USD and that's if YOU'RE LUCKY. Not to mention the market is flooded with fake drives or second-hand drives with their SMART tampered with so you can't gauge it's health properly, I've seen 12TB drives go as much as 450USD.

yeah this is the exact correct answer. the digital contents are easily recoverable must of the time, but the physical disks are easy to get to and damage with a screwdriver

I have an old HDD with like 60 bitcoins on it that failed a few years ago. Any way I can re-activate the drive? When I plug it in my PC is just stuck on the initial mobo splash screen.

Drilled holes will stop your average hacker, but not the feds. The actual files are tiny on the drive. You still leave over 90% of the data intact. They have ways of taking the discs out and reading them directly not relying on the drive's own mechanism.

isn't there a linux thing that converts all the bits to zeroes and then randomizes? get a usb, install linux, look up how to do that. once you install linux and open up a terminal i think it's like two lines you have to write

Just looked it up. It'd take 18+ hours to do this at an average speed of 180mb/s
