It's gonna be your problem when your pipes get fully clogged, your sewage backs up into your own house, and now you have to pay the plumber a full grand to fix it.
But hey if you enjoy the smell of raw sewage instead you're basement or bathroom; and you just love giving plumbers money; then all the power to ya.

Nope, 100% YOUR problem, the landlord will have a company fix the problem and you WILL be held liable for damages, and running from the problem will compound your problem. Get ready for a lawsuit!

1K? Are you joking? My neighbor JUST had this exact problem and ended up costing over 15k(house build in the 50s). The company came out and discovered their pipes contained lead. The company explained that the pipes and the concrete basin had to be replaced, all of it. State code would not permit for a repair. This was the cheapest of three companies. Not to mention Home owners insurance had not kicked in yet. so it was all out of pocket!

I can afford to buy a house, but this is why I'm afraid to buy one. I understand that renting is like throwing money to the wind because it's not going to any investment in property, but it's a lot easier to pay rent and have a landlord fix all your problems than getting smacked with something like this that house inspectors somehow missed.

unclogging a pipe or even a pipe repair can be done on lead..... There is no code saying you cannot repair existing work. I've repaired lead plenty of times and is perfectly fine as a waste line, don't lick the pipe or use it as as supply and you're cool. NO CODE can state if you're allowed to repair a pipe... source me =plumber

Not from regular vegetable oil. That stuff doesn't solidify until it gets near freezing, which it won't if your house is built to code. If it's beef/pork fat then yeah, it could happen, by not likely unless there's something blocking it.

That company took your neighbor for a ride. It's not illegal to have lead pipes. Especially drainage. The mob really gets up in arms over lead supply lines, but no one gives a fuck about lead drains.
