Why is Japan pretty much the only place on the planet left with a thriving, original nerd culture? When will another country take the torch and make cartoons? And I'm actually really excited for Bad Guys 2, I thought the first one was one of the best animated movies I've ever seen, but my impression is that is seen as somewhat artsy even here in America. When I was in Japan last time, it's really insane how in every major city, you'd see Love Live characters plastered over every other Pachinko parlor. We don't really have anything like that. Our nerds are too weak. Until I see Judy Hopps's ass on every scratcher lotto ticket vending machine in the US, I don't think we're even in the same league as Japan. Frozen was the last true animated cultural phenomenon to come out of this country.

I am not into Magic (I'm a Yugioh guy), but I heard they got devoured bad. Warhammer 40k too. D&D too I assume. Then for eletronics I don't even want to know how bad it is. There is probably cool stuff in other subcultures but since I am not in those its unknown to me if its been taken over too. I assume they have. Most hobbies seem to have been turned from 'this is fun' to 'how can I make a profit off this?'.
With all that said, all it takes are a few nerds to do something big to change the communities in a positive way.

Comic authors in the west usually get in the game to make something for The Big Two, in the hopes that a fragment of one of their stories will end up in mcu slop or they want to make something for kids that will get them a cartoon deal with netflix. The fact that hollywood will always think of animation as something exclusively for children and their constant mining of silver age comics for new capeshit influences the ambitions of young comic creators and pulls them away from stand alone, graphic stories for wide demographics - which is something manga and anime has always supplied in spades. I think break out indie animation online and the fading relevance of legacy media is sort of changing this, but it is taking much longer than I thought it would.

The anime industry is largely built on the manga industry.
America doesn't have a manga industry. We have a capeshit industry. As a result, there's no shortage of animated or live action adaptations of superheroes.
We need to get our comic artists to branch out and then actually pay for what they make.
