Don't get caught in a philosophical trap with a bunch of academic mumbo jumbo. Capitalism is better than socialism for one simple reason: abundance. That is, you can buy more stuff and you can buy better stuff. In socialist countries, there is only one type of bread and one type of wine. In capitalist countries, you can choose between may types of bread and many varieties of wine. In socialist countries, goods are designed to serve one utilitarian purpose and are not designed to be enjoyed. In capitalist countries, goods are designed to be enjoyable in addition to serving a purpose. Take hotels and cars for example. In a socialist country, a hotel is nothing more than a room to sleep in. In a capitalist country, hotels are more than just a room to sleep in, there is also room service, pools, exercise equipment, and hospitality. In a socialist country, cars come in only one model and two colors, and it has nothing more than what you strictly need to drive. In a capitalist country, there are many models and colors of cars and they come with seat warmers, air conditioning, and Bluetooth speakers.

That is the straightforward and piratical reason capitalism is better of socialism stripped of all the academic and philosophical talk.

That sounds like communism. Capitalism would just let the people die until they have an immediate economic benefit not to. Can't let profits slip next quarter. Ever.

Variety in goods isn't just about shiny toys or funko popsโ€”it's about options that improve quality of life. Capitalism incentivizes innovation, so you get better tech, medicine, and yes, even bread. Socialism's one-size-fits-all approach often leads to stagnation and shortages, not just fewer flavors of wine. Resources aren't infinite, sure, but capitalism's efficiency in allocation through markets beats central planning's track record. Check history: Soviet bread lines vs. Walmart shelves. Which oneโ€™s braindead?

Late stage capitalism incentivized enshittification. When the market is mature the only way to get more profit is to squeeze it out of the customer. That means shittier products, smaller portions, and fuckall for customer service.

Abundance and variety are definitely strengths of capitalism, I think most people would agree having options is better than being stuck with one bread, one wine, one car.
But abundance alone doesnโ€™t make a system โ€œbetterโ€ for everyone. Capitalism also produces scarcity in other ways, not everyone can afford those choices, and sometimes quality is sacrificed for profit.

The real question might not be capitalism vs socialism as absolutes, but how to combine abundance, innovation, and enjoyment with fairness, accessibility, and sustainability.
Bread and wine are better when everyone gets to eat and drink.

Tariffs are socialism. Trump is friendlier with Putin and Kim Jong-un than leaders of capitalist countries. I am a Reagan/Bush Republican and not a Trump Republican. Look, existentialism sounds deep and meaningful, but let's talk about what you actually get. With consumerism, you get concrete improvements to your daily life. You get a comfortable mattress that helps you sleep better, a reliable car that gets you where you need to go, a smartphone that connects you to people and information instantly. You get restaurants with good food, entertainment systems for relaxation, and clothes that fit well and look good.

With existentialism, what do you actually get? You get to sit around thinking about the meaning of life while sleeping on a hard floor because buying a good mattress is 'inauthentic consumption.' You get to feel authentic while being uncomfortable, disconnected, and limiting your options. Existentialism gives you the 'freedom' to reject things that would actually make your life better.

Consumerism gives you air conditioning in summer, heating in winter, and variety in your meals. Existentialism gives you the philosophical satisfaction of rejecting these comforts while you're sweating, shivering, or eating the same basic food every day. One improves your actual living conditions, the other just makes you feel intellectually superior about having worse living conditions.
