As much as I downplay how much I know, I could *technically* have a "functional conversation" with a local in Japanese.
Granted it might take me a bit to get my point across and my pitch-accent wouldn't exist, but it's possible...
I am much better at reading Japanese now anyway, which is nice since I've been going to /a/ recently.
