If he were a gruff and buff looking guy, he'd be imposing and intimidating as a first impression to most people and then they'd have to reevaluate if he turned out to be a nice dude.
It's not that I'm saying that being a man means you have to be imposing or intimidating, just that those impressions come as a result from being that tall while looking muscular and masculine.
Most of the tall mountainous men I've encountered had developed a disarming demeanor for interacting with people, because they were aware that their physiques get inherently perceived as the risk of a fight in other people on an instinctual level.
