Its hard to say, the Ancient Greeks thought they were gay, but the issue is that the Ancient Greeks were actually still hundreds of years after the Iliad's period and culture had changed a lot since the time period the Iliad is set in and beyond that from the time that 'Homer' first started telling it. Not the best choice, because Tolkien was an elderly classicist that spent more time reading stuff like ancient Greco-Roman plays or myths than most people have done anything.
Many of the models of companionship he would have been working from for Sam and Frodo would have come from societies where male homosexual relationships were common.
