So it's been a common problem throughout the history of computing where a developer will put out some code that doesn't work and when you complain they'll just go "Well, it works on my machine..."

Docker is a way to deal with that issue, by basically letting the developer release the whole machine that it works on. Kind of like a virtual machine (where it entirely emulates the lower levels of hardware), but significantly less resource intensive because it uses a lot of the underlying hardware/OS directly while still containerizing the software. If your code runs in the docker container on your local machine, it'll run in the docker container anywhere else, too.

Kubernetes (usually shortened to k8s for "k, eight frickin' hard to remember letters, and an s") is a tool for managing a whole bunch of docker containers at once, since modern systems are often built out of a bunch of little microservices that have to work together. It handles things like launching multiple copies of containers for load balancing and so one of them going down doesn't take down your whole site.

I wouldn't really put it that way. Modern computers are complex as hell and there are a bajillion libraries all with their own versions that interact in weird and potentially unpredictable ways, and a lot of times one piece of software will need library version X and crash if you have version Y installed but another piece of software will need version Y and crash if you have X installed. So Docker is more to solve those sorts of problems. It lets all of the developers have a single known-working platform they can target together and then run on Amazon's big computers in the sky or whatever when it goes live.
