But, as that anon said, people also sneeze and cough large droplets full of virises, and a simple mask will catch many of these. Infection ans severity is proportional to the viral load, so if you can reduce the number of viruses inhaled, it helps with the disease.

It was airborne. There were also fears that viruses could survive on surfaces - we used to have to wipe down our groceries - but subsequent research showed the virus was not persistent on hard surfaces
