I'm a spic who's going to take the C1 English exam tomorrow for a job opportunity and I still don't know the difference between "should" and "ought to"

No one anywhere says "Ought to I?" They all say "Should I?".
Pop "What is the difference between should and ought to?" into chatgpt for a good explanation. It seems unimportant though. If anyone is failing you over that it sounds unreasonable.

Ought to is, or at least sounds, more formal than should. I think that's the biggest difference.

I always thought "ought to" sounded like something you'd say with a moral connotation. Like something of importance was involved.
Anonymous No.938408159 >>938408291
>>938405812
That is not proper English. Don't ask me why but no native English speaker would talk that way unless they were messing around.
No one even uses ought and if someone did I only see it as "I ought to...", "You ought to...", and "It ought to...". Just replace ought to with should.

Wrong. Read a book by Dickens (Great Expectations) and plenty of characters used "ought to" in the interrogative form.

Would that sound stronger than using 'should'?

NTA
Kinda yes and kinda no. To start with I see no reason to know the following information as it is not something officially recognized by a dictionary. It is more of a cultural quirk.

I suppose the other anon is right but only slightly. You can hear parents using ought to instead of should when they are telling their kid to go do something. It technically is not an order but only technically. The parent no doubt fully expects their kid to do as they said.
In this case ought and should can be used interchangeably and there is no difference in meaning but someone might take it as being looked down on or treated as in an inferior position depending on the circumstance. As such it might be perceived a bit like condescension or an order. That however is mainly up to personal interpretation and tone of voice.

as an ESL myself, I haven't gotten any decent answers to that either. looks like a mere matter of "emphasis".
on the other hand, there's no word or phrase to distinguish the two types of "should":
(1) I am optimistic that this will be true, but not sure
"Try . It should work."
(2) this is not true, but I wish it were based on not just my own wishes but on higher considerations/moral/sense of justice
" should work. Those bastards are slacking."

"supposed to" as a replacement for "should" doesn't help. it can be used in both contexts, with the same issue and no gain in clarity.

Should is broad.
You "should" do something, isn't the same as "I ought to do something."
Should implies obligation, Ought to implies that it would be good of you to do it, but you're not obliged.
You ought to clean your room,
You should clean your room.
One is telling you to clean your room, one is suggesting that your room is dirty and it would be good to clean it.

Why the fuck is there thread about ought to?
It is just a posh way to say should.

Either of the below are ok but they have slightly different meanings. If you are placing an "I" directly after the word ought instead of in front of it you are likely doing something wrong.
Do I have to serve supper again tonight?

Ought to is old timey. Should is more regular and used in normal speech. I think the brits still use shall and must more than ameritards. Should, must, ought to, they're the same with very little difference.
