The prison system in America is evil and is not designed in a way that would help people to be reformed. If you are actually interested on how to improve the American prison system you can look at how prisons and jails are ran in countries with better rates of rehabilitation. Like in some European countries. But this would take thoughtfulness and effort. On the off chance you are talking in good faith then please look into things.

Although I unfortunately feel like you will just come up with some lazy excuse because it's hard for conservative-minded people to change their minds, because they hate change and like to think everyone get's what they deserve and nothing can ever get better and only worse.

It was never meant to be reform or rehab in this country. But that's not the problem. The problem is criminals don't get sentenced anymore. They get a slap on the wrist and go back out and steal their 63rd car. There's a stat for NYC. Something like 167 people commit 80% of the crime. These people are constantly released the next day even if they're assaulting people. Just look at the mostly peaceful protests. They are encouraged. Look at all the street takeovers and robberies in the Bay Area. The DA doesn't touch them because they're minorities. Homeless set LA on fire and the fire chief is told to be quiet about it. You look at the CalFire map and most of the fires are still "under investigation", even from years ago.

I would love to have some kind of rehab system, but we are so far from that right now.
