You low level gamers probably didn't realize that the Black material is a Summoning materia. It's not "Black Magic" It summons Terra, not cast Meteor. The whole thing about Jenova was that unlike all the other spirits from Her home planet, Terra herself wasn't able to integrate with the planet's lifestream. The reason for that wasn't that she ~couldn't, it's that essentially she needed permission. The Cetra had the power to do it. ...but in their world the Cetra were all but extinct.

Originally the Shinra scientists thought Jenova was one of the Cetra, which is why they experimented on Her remains and made Sephiroth. Ultimately, through the resolution seen in Advent Children, Sephiroth DOES become part of the Lifestream taking Terra's energy with Him. The entire movie centers around the difficulty in the initial integration, because it wasn't entirely a peaceful one. Hence, the people suffered Geostigma, essentially a spiritual infection of the lifestream itself. That whole facet resolved when Aertih, the last Cetra, soothed the integration, thereby binding Terra's spiritual energy to the Lifestream, granting that needed permission, and alleviating the spiritual immuno-rejection.

...and he's at peace; now able to open up to his friends and be part of ther circle whole heartdely without any linguring feelings of being and outsider or alien.

They don't come out and say it, but it's pretty well implied that he eventually takes Tifa as his wife. Part of that whole romantic drama is implicated to center around the fact Aeris/Aerith was Cetra, and that perhaps on an instinctual level, he, just like Zack, needed her acceptance.
