Stop sinning by waking up. Remember what you are, and you will naturally stop acting like what you are not.

How do I stop sinning?
You don't. You just make a serious effort through Jesus to not commit the same sins repeatedly.

That's the whole point of confession. What matters is contrition. Sin is unavoidable and you will fall again. You get up, seek guidance, keep the faith, and keep trying to avoid misconduct.

You try to live a good life under the Lord. When you stumble, you seek the aid of your local priest/pastor, whathaveyou.

Based on decades of living in a Catholic country:

> Become an alcoholic (drugs optional).
> Rape or murder somebody. At least cause serious harm to others.
> Instead of going to jail proclaim yourself a Catholic (which you already were)
> Stop drinking and start telling everyone what to do.
> Hate women and gays.

I know several people with this exact story.

FIRSTLY:
Recognize the Reality of Indwelling Sin
The Bible teaches that even believers continue to struggle with sin.

Romans 7:15–25
Paul speaks about his ongoing struggle:

"For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate... Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

1 John 1:8–10

"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

SECONDLY:

Know That You Are Already Forgiven in Christ
You don't stop sinning to be saved β€” you are saved, and thus learn to fight sin.

Ephesians 2:8–9

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God..."

Romans 8:1

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

THIRDLY:

Live in Daily Repentance and Faith
The Christian life is one of continual repentance, returning to baptism, and trusting in Christ.

Luke 9:23

"If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me."

Romans 6:3–4

"We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death... so that we too might walk in newness of life."

FORTHLY:

Use the Means of Grace
God gives you specific, tangible ways to strengthen you against sin.

Word:

"Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth." (John 17:17)

Sacraments (Baptism & Lord’s Supper):

"This is my body, given for you... for the forgiveness of sins." (Luke 22:19–20)

FIFTHLY:

Walk by the Spirit, Not the Flesh
Real transformation comes from the Spirit’s work in your life.

Galatians 5:16–17

"Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

Philippians 2:13

"For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure."

SIXTHLY:

Avoid and Resist Temptation
God calls you to actively resist sin, with His help.

1 Corinthians 10:13

"God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability..."

James 4:7

"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

SEVENTHLY:

Keep Your Eyes on Christ
Fixing your eyes on Christ fuels perseverance in the struggle against sin.

Hebrews 12:1–2

"...let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance... looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith..."

TLDR: You will never be without sin in this life, but by God’s grace, you can daily die to sin and walk in newness of life, trusting that you are fully forgiven in Christ. Through the Word, Sacraments, prayer, and the Spirit, God gives you power to resist sin and grow in holiness β€” not to earn salvation, but because you already have it.

you can't, it's impossible, sinning is written so broadly that it includes things people do in their daily lives, requiring you to constantly ask for forgiveness for just existing
