They are prevalent in media and everything in media is overblown, but like all things, it depends on the individual and not what media, doctors, or anyone says. That being said, a person with healthy kidneys can probably eat all the oxalates they want and be fine, but given enough time, even a healthy person can be susceptible to kidney disease caused by oxalates which is called kidney stones. And kidney stones sounds like the most painful and awful experience a human can go through, so logically, I avoid any risk of that
