Ice-cream is civilization.
I have this personal theory. It goes like: "Ice-cream is civilization".
Imagine a 6-year old girl going to her dad and be like "Dad! Dad! Can I have an ice-cream?" and then the dad goes like "Ok, sure, why not." and gives the girl some loose coin change. And the girl runs out of house, down the street into a corner kiosk. There she chooses one cheap ice cream from the freezer box, pays it at the cashier, and slowly walks back home, humming to herself as she eats that delicious ice cream, as the hot summer evening sun warms her face. A childhood core memory unlocked.
Now, that is a pretty tale, but ask yourself: "What needs to exist for that scenario to happen?" What kind of systems MUST be in place for that to be possible?
You need a stable society with functional economy and monetary currency. It has to be safe for a child to go outside alone without fear of being mugged and/or molested. You need to have an agricultural base with cattle and poultry industry (which needs tending and feeding). Someone has to milk those cows and then the milk needs to be cooled and transported to a dairy, where it is made into ice cream with eggs. It has be be made in bulk quantities in order for it to be sold in kiosks and there needs to be demand for it - There needs to be a population with disposable income to buy it.
You need stable electrical grid to run the freezers, you need reliable transportation network of cooled trucks to bring int the goods to the kiosks. The father needs to have a steady income and reasonably good economic standing in order to allow extra expenses like ice-cream. And that money must be worth something so people accept it in exchance of goods and services. All this has to happen for that core childhood memory to take place.
Therefore, the existance of ice-cream means CIVILIZATION. The availability of cheap ice-cream at the corner kiosk is a litmus test for a functional society.
