Because I made the mistake of adding someone as a friend whose entire existence hinges on a constant stream of validation from everyone around them when 99.9% of the time when I log in I just want to play some solo game for an hour and then go cook dinner for my sister. I didn't realize clicking accept would mean I'm solely responsible if some prison-gay autist kills himself over me, but I don't like it. If it's any consolation I got sick of the act and deleted you while also changing my username and account link and unfriending every mutual to absolutely ensure you got the message.

Because i have a couple of autistic friends that are good IRL friends but they are also incredibly annoying online, either because they keep suggesting slopware to play in coop, or because they just keep writing and talking like im some kind of infinite receptacle. Both will immediately write to me if i go online without fail.
Normally i would just tell them that im not in the mood or that im doing something else, but they are both extremely touchy and i know they would resent me forever if i told them so... i know the kind.
Also one of them literally came to my house unannounced because i didn't answer a message for a couple of days.

Initially when i first got steam my friends and i would organize to meet up through a group chat and then go online and play, so adding them as friends was just a way to make it easier. Then the group got bigger because "hey im inviting someone just for this session"

Basically i had no idea "friends" on steam would actually start writing to me.
I think the problem is calling it "FRIEND LIST" in the first place. Gives unstable people the wrong idea. Just call it contact list or something.

I unadded all my friends and now I keep a strict no policy. Why even have that burden? Eventually friends will have expectations, want to meet up after 5-10 years of friendship.

I just have it set so that I don't appear in game even when I am in one, but I am still online.
The reason I do it is because I added one little cousin and one nephew to my Steam account and while I like both of them, they're both kids and do not yet understand social situations. The second I get into a game one of them will message me and will not stop messaging me until I stop responding which makes me feel bad. They just can't recognize (yet) when someone is busy and doesn't have time to chat.
I still say hi to them, but it is just too much when I want to play a game and they will sit there and just go on for hours about everything.

I've gotten both of my brothers Christmas and birthday gifts every year for the past 5 or 6 years and neither of them have given me anything. Hell, one year one of them didn't even say anything to me until like 10:30 PM or something. Just feels weird. I go out of my way to get them stuff they'll enjoy, like, or can use and they just seem to forget about me.
I don't care about the price, I am not expecting some equivalent value. I am not giving gifts as an investment, I do it it to show I care. When they barely say anything to me on my Birthday or Christmas it feels like they don't give a shit.

Nothing about this is true lmao. There is a difference between running Steam in offline mode and being offline in the Steam friends menu. I'm offline for over 50 days and still get cheevos, time is tracked and cloud works

There's a difference between being completely offline on Steam and just offline on Steam friends. You can still get most achievements when offline on Steam, it just won't update until you go back online.
