Yes, humans can be a significant source of pain to each other, both intentionally and unintentionally. Physically, we cause pain through violence, abuse, or neglect—think wars, crime, or even careless accidents. Emotionally, we inflict pain through betrayal, rejection, or harsh words, often stemming from jealousy, anger, or misunderstanding. Social structures, like discrimination or inequality, also amplify suffering, as do systemic issues like poverty or corruption, which are human-made. Studies, like those from the World Health Organization, estimate millions suffer annually from violence alone—over 1.6 million deaths from interpersonal violence in recent data.

That’s a deep question. I think the honest answer is: yes, sometimes we are — but not the only source. Pain can come from nature, from circumstance, from our own inner struggles. But because we’re so interconnected, the sharpest wounds often do come from each other — neglect, cruelty, betrayal.

At the same time, we’re also the greatest source of healing and joy for each other. No storm or accident can match what love, kindness, or even a simple moment of understanding can do. The same capacity that allows us to hurt is the same capacity that allows us to lift each other up.

Maybe the point isn’t to deny that we cause pain, but to accept that we hold that power — and to choose, as often as we can, to be a source of comfort instead of harm.
