I've been reading the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Not especially for children per se. That's a later trend. Everyone enjoyed those kinds of stories back then. A lot of them are gruesome and are very sanitized for the Disneys and whatnot. Yes, in the original, the wolf is cut open and stones are put in his belly. Then he wakes up and falls down dead from the weight of the stones.
I've read many, many folk tale collections like this. Love 'em. Love telling them to my friends. Too tedious to type up for you lads, though.
I remember last year, while my mom and I were getting food from a food pantry, I told her a Cinderella-type story from Scotland called "Fair, Brown, and Trembling." She loved it. Whenever the protagonist got her last lovely dress, I had my mom make it up and describe the color schemes and ribbons and the rest. Audience participation, you know. And then I told her the tragic tale of Gelert, the Welsh hound, and she cried.
Not just for kids, my friend.
