I’m a cook at a retard center. Criminally underpaid - but aren’t we all. As the months go on they start asking you to do more and more but in less time. More and more tasks that don’t fall into your job description, giving bathroom breaks to the teachers, going down to the basement and relighting the pilot light because they don’t want to call/pay the maintenance guy to do it, etc etc.

I started to get in trouble for my overtime. So I started working on my breaks and after clocking out (boss just turns a blind eye). I truly thought that I was failing at my job and that I needed to work on my breaks just to keep up. 8 hr days turn into 10 hr days where I’m only getting underpaid for the 8. For reference I prep, cook, serve, and clean up for around 1,100 -1,300 meals per week with almost no help ever.

They also added several kids to the roster that have a myriad of dietary restrictions which means separate meals prepared for them. (I have no control over the menu so when I have to serve taco Mac-n-cheese I have to make a completely separate meal for the kids that are gluten free and vegan etc etc.

You get pressured to lower the quality of food and service so you can be “faster” but this is the only food that the vast majority of these kids get access to all day. Even when I work my ass off to make it nice for them, a lot of them will throw most of it away (they’re like 2-5 years old, it’s normal) but my assistant director literally told me to stop trying so hard becuase “we don’t want them start expecting it to be this good all the time”. Director once said at a staff meeting that they don’t want to “feed the trash can” but that exactly what they do. How many of these kids don’t get adequate nutrition for their development because the food was literal slop?
