Can I ever one day hope to be great without first being good? Is honor the kind of thing I can just find on a quest? And is it better to die in dignity or live in shame?

Go for a nice long walk. Go to the library and ask the librarians to recommend good novels. Listen to Bach.

if being great is a measure of good a thing is, how do we measure the good of a thing? calamity and disaster can also be described as great though not necessarily good. Instead, strive to be and do good for the sake of the good. great is a title that others will put on you, and when you're good it will feel wrong.

honor is the kind of thing you find on a quest. trials and tribulations are the great test of honor and courage. our principles mean nothing if we can put them aside. tilting at windmills does not a quest not however. again, be kind, do good. I've found that the hardest quest to date, to see the human in others, to empathize, and try always try to be kind; I can't always be good, and I may never be great, but let me be kind. there is more honor is some simple acts than there in slaying dragons.

Yes. Living in shame is a new death every day. but there isn't shame is being down, or being momentarily weak, or being depressed, or any of that. those things are human. I think your question would be better phrased as, is it better to die on your feet than to live on your knees, which we know it is better to die fighting.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. at the end of that path is what you're looking for.
