Hey /b/ you ever notice that quarters have these ridges on the side? I wonder why that is. Why do quarters have ridges? Just curious.

Coins were originally made out of precious metals, which meant that if you clipped the edges of a coin you could sell the silver/gold that it was made of while also having the value of the coin itself. Eventually countries started putting edges or ridges on coins to make it obvious when people fucked with them. These different edges and ridges also helped people identify the type of coin they had in their hand without seeing it, so they kept it after switching to base (non-precious) metal coins.

Who popularized coin clipping in many European countries that caused them to start putting ridges on them?

Everyone that was trying to save money by shorting the seller? What the fuck do you mean who? Are you expecting a specific persons name or a specific group of people?

Judaism. They love clipping things, especially if it's profitable.

Quarters and dimes have ridges on the side; nickels and pennies do not.

This helps blind people identify coins. The big one with ridges is a quarter; the big one that has no ridges is a nickel. The small one with ridges is a dime; the small one without ridges is a penny.
