So that the faggots from plebbit that begged hiroshimoot for names to be put back on /b/ couldn't corral people and numbers making their propaganda campaigns less effective. Essentially there's a group of faggots with a discord that purposefully post (posted, not really sure if they bother anymore) constant BBC and cuck shit to drown out opinions on the board and the poster counter allowed them to keep track of how many unique users actually bothered interacting with their gay shit. Eliminating that and making it so that names can be used by anyone and duplicated meaning youre still anonymous destroys their ability to see just how many people are active on the board which they relied on for their strategy

My theory at least considering how mad those faggots where about all of it

Because people would us it to point out when people were bumping their own threads/replying to themselves. Removing that makes it easier to fool people into thinking posts and engagement are organic, making it easier to lie to advertisers and make it appear as if the site is growing.
