Thing is, even most of the red states have more lax abortion laws than most of the countries in the EU.
It basically breaks down in that the laws didn't change organically, by the vote of the people. There was a single supreme court case back in 1973, Roe v Wade, which forced all states to allow abortion with little in the way of restrictions.
The case was always kind of bullshit, and the democrats and republicans used it for fundraising and played up the controversy for 50 years instead of ever bothering to work to get federal legislation put together codifying it.
And then once the rationale of Roe v Wade was struck down, sending it back to the states to legislate, we'd had 50 years worth of political divisiveness on the issue.
