>Official language is English?
Nope. That was made true ONLY in March of 2025, by Donald Trump's executive order, and in direct opposition to the founder's intentions; they literally wrote about this.
The Constitution was reprinted in Dutch and German to accomodate Dutch and German speakers in Pennsylvania and Virginia, before it was ratified, so they were allowed to clearly agree to it.
The founders intentionally chose no specific national language because they respected national liberty.
One of the most well read Americans of the time, Jefferson, held the same:
"Certainly so great growing a population, spread over such an
extent of country, with such a variety of climates, of
productions, of arts, must enlarge their language, to make it
answer its purpose of expressing all ideas, the new as well as
the old. The new circumstances under which we are placed,
call for new words, new phrases, and for the transfer of old
words to new objects. An American dialect will therefore be
formed..."
Jefferson believed multilingualism was key to American success, and wanted to teach Old-English in schools to help children better understand modern English.
If Benjamin Franklin had his way we would unironically all speak Hebrew.
